Lecturer profile:

Gao Hongkai, professor and doctoral supervisor of the School of Geographic Sciences, East China Normal University, is the winner of the National Outstanding Youth Fund. He received his PhD degree from Technische Universiteit Delft (TU Delft) in the Netherlands. His research interests include the basic theory of basin hydrology, cryosphere hydrology, and eco-hydrology. He has published more than 40 academic papers in the field of hydrology and presided over 4 National Natural Science Foundation projects. In 2019, he received the Shiyafeng Young Scientist Award for Cryosphere and Environment. He is currently serving as the editorial board of Hydrology and Earth System Sciences and the deputy editor of the Journal of Hydrology.

Lecture Introduction:

"The response of runoff and groundwater to climate change in cold Regions" is one of the 23 outstanding water science questions presented by the International Hydrology Association (IAHS). Due to the complex multi-phase transformation of hydrological processes in cryosphere basins, the theories and methods of classical hydrology are not applicable in cryosphere basins. In addition, the hydrological and meteorological data of the Cryosphere basin are extremely scarce, so the scientific community still has an insufficient understanding of its hydrological laws. This report will focus on the cryospheric watershed hydrological model (Fleflex Cryo) developed by ourselves. The model systematically simulates the effects of various terrestrial cryosphere elements (glacier, frozen soil, and snow cover) on the hydrological processes of the basin, and couples ground-remote sensing-hydrochemistry and other multi-source heterogeneous information to test the model rigorously, which significantly reduce the uncertainty. The model has been successfully applied to the simulation and prediction of many typical watersheds, such as the Urumqi River Source 1 Glacier, the Yangtze River Source Dongkemadi Glacier, the Yigongzangbu, and the Qilian Mountain Hulugou, etc., which is expected to provide more solid scientific support for the prediction of future hydrological changes in the cryosphere.
